Having Difficult Conversations about School Shootings

It’s been days since the most recent school shooting shook America. Amidst the outrage, pain, and fear we may find ourselves at a loss asking questions that don’t have straight forward answers. How do we process and discuss this tragedy with our deaf and hard of hearing students? How do we support our children who fear that this may happen at their school? How do we support ourselves?

Whether you are a parent, caregiver or educator, emotions and stress may be running high and the thought of searching online for these answers can be overwhelming. To offer our support, the CSD Learns team is compiling resources that may be helpful to you and your children.

We want to remind you that we are here to support you in your efforts. If you have any questions, or are in search of a specific resource, please contact us and our team will do our best to help you find what you need. As we find more resources we will share them through our InstagramFacebook, and Twitter.

Age-Appropriate Discussions

This article by the Today Show covers the specific approaches we can take in discussing with children by specific age group.

Noticing the Signs

Some of us may begin to wonder how we can prevent this from occurring. What are the warning signs to notice in teenagers who are struggling with mental health issues? Chalkbeat lists what we should be paying attention to.

More Resources to Browse Through

American School Counselor Association has a plethora of resources to further explore resources beyond this blogpost.

We know that the resource list above is not exhaustive. If you have any videos, articles, or guides that you’ve found helpful, please share them with us through social media, or through our contact form so we can share them with other educators.

It is that time of year again where educators return to their schools and planning for the classes they are assigned to teach. In Deaf Education, we know that there is a good amount of time searching for resources that are designed to appeal deaf and hard of hearing students. Educators are often exploring the internet with the questions:

Did you know that CSD Learns has created over 20 FREE teacher’s toolkits? They are ready-made presentations with deaf pedagogical needs in mind! Videos, worksheets and additional external links to support discussions in the classroom are included. The best part about those teacher’s toolkits is that there are videos of deaf and hard of hearing adults sharing their experiences in their respective fields. This reinforces CSD Learns’ value in connecting future generations of deaf adults to role models that look like them!

So how would you use our teacher’s toolkit?

Check out those videos we created for one of our toolkits! Those videos are applicable to all 20+ toolkits that we have. Click below to learn about how to use them once they are downloaded. When you’re ready, visit https://csdlearns.com/teachers-toolkit/ to add them to your lesson plans!

Oil Spills

Interactive Earth Day Activity in ASL

Did you know that the first earth day started because of an oil spill off the coast of California? Oil spills have a tremendous impact on our environment. When there is oil floating atop the ocean many birds and fish will accidentally ingest the oil, which also covers their bodies. We may not be able to prevent all oil spills, but people have found a solution.

Watch Dr. Wooten and Dr. Spiecker perform an experiment showing what happens when there is an oil spill, and how we can resolve the issue. You can find the instructions below!

 How to Do it

Living in an acidic environment can have a negative impact on marine life. You can compare what happens to an exoskeleton in a healthy vs. acidic environment if you:

  1. Fill one jar with water
  2. Fill one jar with vinegar
  3. Place a raw egg in each jar
  4. Wait for 5-7 days
  5. Remove each egg and compare!

 How to Do it

Acids and bases have different impacts on the ocean. We can visualize this by mixing different materials with cabbage juice. If a substance is acidic, the cabbage juice will turn pink. If it's a base, blue.

  1. Fill three cups with an equal amount of cabbage juice
  2. In one cup, pour in a little bit of vinegar and stir.
  3. In another cup, pour in the baking soda and stir.
  4. If you have a straw, put it into the third cup and blow into it for 3-4 minutes.

Processing the Violence Against the AAPI Community with your Students

Processing the violence against the AAPI community with your students

During the course of this pandemic, we have begun to recognize a rise in violence and racism towards the Asian American Pacific Islanders (AAPI) community. While not anti-racism experts, the CSD Learns team knows from firsthand experience that the classroom is often the place where deaf and hard of hearing students turn to for clarity and to process major events occurring in the world using American Sign Language.

Our team has compiled some resources for you to use as you prepare to have those conversations, whether it is about the recent shootings that occurred in Atlanta, GA or the discrimination and racism towards the AAPI community during this pandemic.

Addressing Anti-Asian Bias

Formerly known as Teaching Tolerance, Learning for Justice has put together a few articles about how to address the recent events as well as the historical events that led us to this point in America.

After Atlanta: Teaching About Asian American Identity and History

An Asian-American and educator wrote this article about teaching Asian American identity and history to our students.

Holding Space for the Violence in Atlanta

How to Teach Kids About Taboo Topics

What do you do in the exact moment your student brings up something that you’re uncomfortable addressing? Liz Kleinrock talks about how important it is to address taboo topics that bring you, or other people in the classroom, discomfort.

Young, Proud, and Sung-jee

This e-book was developed to promote conversations with students on the recent anti-Asian racism that has occurred during this time of the pandemic. It is suited for elementary aged children and includes advanced vocabulary with child-friendly definitions.

There’s been a rise in anti-Asian attacks. Here’s how to be an ally to the community

This article from Newsela talks about how we, as allies, can show our support for the Asian and Asian American communities, from donating to organizing. Use this article to discuss allyship with your students and how important it is to take action in ways big and small to dismantle systemic racism.

Teaching After Political Unrest: Resources for Deaf Education

Talking with your students about the events at the Capitol

Part of the job as educators is to bring a space for our students to talk about the current events of the world. Last night, many of us were glued to the TV watching the events that unfolded at the United States Capitol as Congress began to certify the votes of the Presidential Election of 2020. How do we address this event with our students? Here are some resources that we found to assist you in your instructional planning.

Exploring Financial Education Strategies

On December 10, 2020, co-hosts Todd Bonheyo and MaryEllen Graham were back at it for their second webinar in CSD Learns’ Best Practices of Financial Education Series. Joined by guest-panelist Daniel Heinze, a middle school and high school math teacher at New Mexico School for the Deaf, the three discussed the advantages and challenges of teaching personal finance in an in-person classroom versus a virtual one.

Topics covered included ASL vocabulary for financial terminology, as well as how to engage students in a virtual realm without traditional “hands-on” activities. The group also shared their thoughts and experiences about the general transition process from-in-person to remote learning due to the pandemic.

Want to see what they have to say? Watch a recording of the webinar here:

Budget Challenge

Did you know that 65% of Americans don’t know what they spent last month? According to a survey done by mint.com, only 2 out of 5 Americans could tell you exactly what they spent in the previous thirty days. Making and sticking to a budget takes discipline – and practice.

Budgetchallenge.com provides a two-month financial literacy program that you can use with your students to teach about emergency funds, bills, debt, and more.

Opportunities for financial education are everywhere. Whether it's figuring out whether to buy your food in bulk, understanding what impact a car loan will have, or setting up a savings account, your students will need to have a solid grasp on their finances. Setting up virtual or in-person field trips to these staple locations are a great opportunity for your students to learn more about their everyday finances. Here are some great examples of places you can work with, and what your students can learn from them:

Auto dealerships

Many students dream of owning their own car. As a large purchase, they likely won’t have much experience with it before they purchase their first one. Contact your local auto dealership to see if they can explain the finances that surround an automobile purchase, including things like:

Insurance: How much is insurance? Where do you get it? What impacts your rate?

Car Loan: What’s a good rate? How can you get one? How does interest factor in?

Kelly Blue Book: What resources can you use to make sure you’re getting the best deal? What should you be looking for in cost and capabilities?

Travel Agencies

Spice up your financial education classes with photos of a beach paradise, mountain hideaway, or energetic city. Traveling includes a lot of separate costs, but is extremely motivating. A field trip with a travel agency is a great way to teach your students about saving for, and spending on, a trip of a lifetime. Your guest presenter could cover things like managing costs for:

Home improvement stores

Daniel recommends taking your virtual class on the move. For one financial education lesson, he traveled to his local home improvement store, showed his students different products and asked them to create the budget for a fictional home improvement project in their living spaces. Through this field trip, his students were able to figure out cost for area/volume, and see what goes into creating a budget for house projects.

Big Box Stores

Have you ever justified buying more because of a great sale? Don’t worry, it happens to all of us. BOGO deals are designed to get consumers to spend more. Take a field trip to your local big box store to teach your students about discounts and percentages.

Grocery Stores

Are your students prepared to determine whether it’s better to buy a product in bulk? Take them on a virtual field trip to a grocery store and work through your decision-making processes with them. Grocery shopping is something that everyone will need to do at some point in their lives, so this is a great real-life lesson for students to learn sooner, rather than later.

Banks

It’s never too early to start saving. A trip to the bank is a perfect opportunity to teach your students about what it takes to open an account, how to allocate savings, manage a checking account and more. You can even ask a banker to talk more about building credit and what to look for when taking out loans.
