Do your students have the tools to keep safe on the internet? Unfortunately, most people have very limited access to training about best practices for protecting themselves on the web. In fact, 77% of US/UK survey respondents say they've never been offered cybersecurity curriculum at any level. Studies show that Gen Z is the least engaged in cybersecurity, despite spending over 4 hours a day online. And many deaf students don’t have a deaf adult at home to talk them through the basics.

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure="1_3,2_3" use_custom_gutter="on" _builder_version="4.9.2" _module_preset="default" width="100%" custom_margin="||||false|false" custom_padding="||||false|false"][et_pb_column type="1_3" _builder_version="4.6.6" _module_preset="default"][et_pb_image src="https://csdlearns.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/9/2021/02/Untitled-design-2021-02-11T132144.709.png" title_text="Untitled design - 2021-02-11T132144.709" _builder_version="4.9.2" _module_preset="default"][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type="2_3" _builder_version="4.6.6" _module_preset="default"][et_pb_text ul_item_indent="67px" _builder_version="4.9.2" _module_preset="default" header_2_font_size="27px"]

That’s why CSD Learns created “Developing Your Cybersense,” a toolkit that supports teachers in educating their students about cybersecurity. “Developing Your Cybersense” is available as a PDF or in Google Slides, and is flexibly designed to be used as little or as much as you like.

Cybersecurity—It’s More Than Just Hackers

Hollywood has made some blockbusters about big-time hackers trying to take down the federal government. In reality, large-scale hacking is a small piece of the cybersecurity puzzle. Cybersecurity encompasses a wide range of practices and safeguards, everything from traditional firewalls, to creating strong passwords, even cyberbullying!

[/et_pb_text][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][et_pb_row column_structure="1_3,2_3" _builder_version="4.9.2" _module_preset="default" width="100%" custom_margin="20px||||false|true"][et_pb_column type="1_3" _builder_version="4.8.2" _module_preset="default"][et_pb_image src="https://csdlearns.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/9/2021/03/1-1.png" title_text="1" _builder_version="4.9.2" _module_preset="default"][/et_pb_image][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type="2_3" _builder_version="4.8.2" _module_preset="default"][et_pb_text _builder_version="4.9.2" _module_preset="default"]

Cybersecurity is a part of STEM

Cybersecurity draws on a variety of skillsets, including computer hardware and software knowledge, as well as operating systems, networking, and sometimes even coding. This means discussions about cybersecurity can fit into any science or technology classroom. The sooner students have access to knowledge about good cybersecurity practices, the sooner they can form their own good habits in their increasingly cloud-based worlds.

The Future of Education is Now

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed nearly every sector of our society, and education is no exception. Now more than ever, teachers are relying on technology to connect with students, but most teachers report that they’ve had no formal training on how to best protect the devices from which they teach. With one in five districts saying they’ll continue a fully online learning option after the pandemic is over, it’s clear that remote learning is here to stay.

STEM Professionals in Higher Ed Webinar

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) occupations some of the fastest-growing careers. The BLS projects that 9 million jobs STEM jobs will be created between 2012 and 2022. STEM jobs are some of the highest paying as well, with a median annual wage of $76,000. That's double the average for many other jobs, making careers in these fields highly competitive.

A degree in higher education is essential to be able to compete for emerging STEM careers.

While individuals may not need a college degree for some jobs, like computer support specialists or web developers, most STEM jobs require a bachelor's degree at minimum.  Many STEM students will choose to continue their education to pursue master’s and doctoral degrees. These advanced degrees allow them to explore a particular field of study in-depth and develop expertise in that field's narrow aspect.

Preparing students for jobs in these fields can be challenging.

High school students don't have to wait for college to pursue STEM studies. Many young people discover their interest in STEM by taking part in everyday educational activities both at home and in the classroom. Raising a plant, reading books, and playing outside can foster a love of horticulture, mechanics, and ecology. Actively engaging deaf and hard of hearing students or children in STEM-based curricula can lead to a bright career in a growing field.

Don't take it from us; take it from the three deaf STEMists in CSD Learns' webinar series on Best Practices in STEM Higher Education! These scientists share what drew them to STEM, who inspired them, and how they've navigated higher education settings as students and professionals. Catch a recap in the video below.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_video src="https://youtu.be/Dk2dVQdgsk8" _builder_version="4.7.4" _module_preset="default" hover_enabled="0" sticky_enabled="0"][/et_pb_video][et_pb_text _builder_version="4.7.4" _module_preset="default" hover_enabled="0" sticky_enabled="0"]

Here are three main takeaways you should know:

Passion, drive, and curiosity are key to success.

STEM education is exceptionally rigorous. However, some fields are more challenging than others. STEM learning is best when one’s studies align with their passions. For instance, an interest in dogs could lead to an interest in biology. While learning about biology, a student may discover an interest in anatomy, leading to a career in Veterinary Sciences. Consider urging them to reflect on their favorite pastimes or introduce them to new subject matter. Whichever the case, there is always something that will spark their curiosity. Also, always, encourage them to ask questions and do your best to answer as many as you can!

The family is the first role model for STEM learning.

Family members can have a massive impact on students' educational interests. Encouraging young students to go outside, read books, and ask questions can help them develop scientific mindsets early on. Never underestimate the value of spending time with young students to discover what they are curious about and answering questions. And if you don't know, push them to find the answers for themselves.

Higher education is an important step in one’s STEM journey.

Since most of STEM jobs require a bachelor's degree, preparing students for college is essential. It is important to emphasize that students don't need to have their careers and interests all planned out. College is an excellent opportunity for students to explore the vast array of STEM disciplines. They may discover an interest in a completely different subject matter altogether. And that's okay! Discovering their passion while in higher education can lead them to pursue ongoing studies in advanced STEM disciplines and grow our pool of engineers, researchers, medical professionals, computer scientists, farmers, statisticians, and more!

Deaf People of Color in STEM

[et_pb_section fb_built="1" _builder_version="4.7.3" _module_preset="default"][et_pb_row _builder_version="4.7.3" _module_preset="default"][et_pb_column type="4_4" _builder_version="4.7.3" _module_preset="default"][et_pb_text _builder_version="4.7.3" _module_preset="default"]

Deaf People of Color in STEM

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) careers are among the fastest-growing and highest-paying jobs today. Yet these industries are some of the least representative among women and people of color, specifically people who are Black, Indigenous and Hispanic/Latino/a/x (Latinx).

According to PEW research, Blacks make up 11% of the U.S. workforce overall but represent 9% of STEM workers, while Latinx comprise 16% of the U.S. workforce but only 7% of all STEM workers. Asians are somewhat overrepresented, making up nearly 30% of the workforce. Plus, the Department of Commerce found that 7 out of 20 STEM positions in the US are held by white, non-latinxs and less than 25% of STEM positions are held by women.

Lack of representation among Blacks and Latinxs have been attributed to a variety of issues: lack of support, quality education, and workplace discrimination, to name a few. For Deaf and hard of hearing STEMists of color, language and communication barriers pose additional challenges. Thanks to CSD Learns’ partnership with General Motors, the number STEMists of color is growing. Watch the webinar to hear from three talented STEMists of color on their experiences coming up in the field.

Here are three takeaways on how you can support your children, students, or mentees of color:
Educators from predominantly white institutions (PWIs) can do more.

Indulge and encourage students’ curiosity. Students of color, especially those in PWIs, can face certain microaggressions from both peers and teachers. When a student of color asks a question and doesn’t get called on, this can be perceived as discriminatory or a microaggression. Encourage all of your students to participate equally, and create an environment where everyone feels safe asking questions. Also, take the time to learn how to communicate with diverse students. Deaf and hard of hearing students of color may be used to using other spoken or signed languages such as Black American Sign Language (BASL) or Indian Sign Language (ISL) at home. Certain concepts may not always be as easily understood due to language or cultural differences. Review your content and find innovative ways to break down complex concepts.

Representation matters.

There are many STEM role models of color. Young students need to have the opportunity to see themselves in fields that are perceived as predominantly white. Incorporate lessons about STEMists of color into your curriculum and make efforts to invite diverse visitors for career day. There’s nothing more powerful and motivating as seeing yourself reflected in your heroes.

If you're looking for representative resources, we offer a variety of STEM toolkits and courses for students featuring D/HH role models. Sign up, or login to get access.

Mix things up.

Put students from different backgrounds together for group projects. Strong soft skills such as interpersonal communication and problem-solving are highly valued in STEM careers. Give your students the opportunity to learn how to work with one another and build on their analytical skills. This will help your students replicate these behaviors in the workplace and make STEM a more inclusive space for everyone.

STEM Toolkits For Hybrid Learning

Balancing Preparation and Flexibility in a Time of Uncertainty

With the start of a new school year coming up, teachers are tasked with creating a meaningful learning experience for their deaf and hard of hearing students for the upcoming year. Doing this while navigating Coronavirus is especially challenging. Many have been asked to plan for a semester that accommodates hybrid learning or the flexibility of transitioning from in-person to digital learning at a moment’s notice.

This coming Fall, a teacher’s responsibilities will extend far beyond restructuring their curricula. We know that teachers have an important impact on a child’s mental/physical health, social well being, and more. With everything that our students have been dealing with since March, this impact is more important than ever. Balancing all of these responsibilities, with new school guidelines, in addition to protecting their own health is a lot for one person to handle.

We at CSD Learns want to ease that burden.

CSD Learns STEM Toolkits Are the Adaptable Resources You Need

We have worked with subject matter experts to create a series of STEM Teacher’s Toolkits to use in elementary, middle, and high school. These toolkits are easy to implement online, in-person – or both simultaneously.

Featuring deaf and hard of hearing role models, each toolkit provides educators with several weeks’ worth of lessons (in ASL) that students will love. Each free toolkit has videos, interactive activities, quizzes and more. Keep reading to find the perfect toolkit for your classroom.
