Challenges in STEM Education

CSD Learns hosted their second webinar of the Best Practices in STEM Education series on November 20, 2019. This webinar was called Challenges of STEM Education, and a major focus was on deaf role models in STEM.

This series is hosted by Scott Cohen, a deaf doctoral student studying STEM Education at the University of Georgia. He was joined by three deaf panelists: Dr. Alicia Wooten, an immunologist, Andrew Donald, a dentist, and Cynthia King, a hydrologic technician.

As Scott Cohen explained in the first webinar, there is a leaky pipeline in STEM education for DHH students -- with DHH student numbers dropping off between undergraduate school and graduate school. One of the ways to patch up this pipeline is to set up a platform for deaf role models in STEM. This webinar is a place where conversations began. Our panelists shared their personal experiences, challenges and barriers that they have faced. They also delved into how they serve and continue to serve instrumental roles in supporting DHH youth. Their insight and advice are for those who want to obtain careers in the STEM field.

CSD Learns believes that role models are one of the most important teaching tools to help young people visualize their future; if they can see and connect with adults who share intersectional identities with them, they can imagine and build a path towards fulfilling STEM careers.
