2019 Earth Week Webinar for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students

CSD Learns and RIT/NTID partnered together to present a webinar focused on encouraging a love of STEM education in Deaf and Hard of Hearing middle school students. Students saw a panel of Deaf and Hard of Hearing professionals currently working in exciting STEM fields. This engaging webinar happened on April 29, 2019 at 11:45 a.m – 12:45 p.m EST.

Sachiko studied Wildlife and Fisheries Science at Texas A&M University and went on to get her Masters in International Development from Gallaudet University. She founded CorpsTHAT, which strives to create a safe and inclusive place for Deaf people in conservation corps and outdoor programs.

Johanna graduated from University of Minnesota – Twin Cities with a BS in Computer Science. She works for NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center. In April 2017, she became the first Deaf engineer to take an active role in the control room during crewed flight tests.

Jo knew she wanted to be an engineer for a living after being involved in a robotics camp in high school. She went on to obtain a BS and MS degrees in Computer Engineering with a focus on artificial intelligence from RIT. She works for Texas Instruments where she writes and tests firmware for different battery gauging products.

Steven is currently a research associate at the Systems Management and Production (SMAP) Center at University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH).  He completed his BS in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering from RIT and is currently finishing up an MS in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) at RIT.
